Thomas Irvine McElroy built this beautiful Greek Revival Plantation Home on 949 acres and presented it as a Wedding Gift to his young bride, Sarah Jane Maxwell in 1851. Lavished with numerous architectural features, it is accented with Italianate detail and spans just under 6,000 sq. ft., with 14′ ceilings, 12′ doorways, 9′ windows, and 12 original rooms. Most rooms are 20′ x 20′, with some even larger. In the foyer, you’ll enjoy a grand cherry floating spiral staircase.  

The McElroy family was one of the pioneer families that settled the greater Springfield area, originating from Scotland.   Thomas McElroy’s farm included sheep, cattle, tobacco, corn, wheat, and other products.  The Manor was in the McElroy family for approximately 50 years, with son William being the last to own/live here. Its colorful past includes stories of an Antebellum Plantation, use as a Civil War Confederate Encampment and Union Field Hospital after the Battle of Perryville, Birthplace and Childhood Home to Phil Simms, former NY Giants Quarterback and Super Bowl XXI’s MVP, Pineview, a popular Dinner Hall, and Tanalorne, a Foster Home to over 300 children. Today, it continues to be a Bed & Breakfast for everyone to enjoy.

Historic, Stately Elegance

The main foyer, which measures 12′ wide and 45′ long, is dominated by the original, freestanding, cherry spiral staircase and lighted by the smallest of three Murano crystal chandeliers, which dates to 1900. This chandelier originally hung in The Kentucky Hotel, a grand southern hotel in downtown Louisville.

Awaken to the delightful sounds of chirping birds and the wafting aromas of breakfast cooking as the day begins.  In the evening, relax in the Front Parlor or tree-draped patio and enjoy a complimentary homemade dessert, or perhaps some of that bourbon you picked up out on the trail today.   A spacious Parlor/communal area offers cozy surroundings for a game of cards, puzzle making, or curling up with a good book. A Mahogany Baby Grand Piano is available for our guests to play and enjoy as well.

Family & Pet-Friendly Lodging in Kentucky

Our farm setting is perfect for all ages. We welcome well-behaved children, as we have designated family rooms separate from our more romantic rooms, for those interested in quiet, romantic getaways. Children’s rate is $30/child/night, 11 years old or younger. No age restrictions for Full House Rental. Please call to further discuss special arrangements. 

Well-behaved pets are welcome under certain guidelines. Please review our Pet Policy for further details and arrangements. We have 2 designated pet-friendly guest rooms: The John James Audubon and the Steven Collins Foster rooms.  All others are maintained as non-pet-friendly out of respect for guests with pet allergies. Pet Fee is $50 per day. Advance pet approval is required. Also, a signed Pet Policy Agreement Form must be provided at check-in.

A Relaxing Farm Stay in Kentucky
Relax at our peaceful, farm-like setting. You will find front porch, garden, and pasture side benches, a hammock, and a large patio area with a firepit,  tables,  and comfortable seating set among a Catalpa and Maple trees. Stroll the walking paths throughout the grounds as you meander your way to pet horses and mini donkeys through the fence.  Numerous birds and bunnies are spotted on the property throughout the seasons for your enjoyment, and don’t forget to look up, you might spot Buddy the squirrel. Meet the Innkeepers at Maple Hill Manor

We’re celebrating over 35 years of welcoming guests at Maple Hill Manor, one of the most refined B&Bs for romantic getaways in Kentucky. Current Owners, Justin and Catherine Ulrey, purchased the estate in March of 2022 to continue sharing it with everyone who appreciates history, old homes, horses, country life in Kentucky, and the Bourbon Trail.

Justin and Catherine recently purchased Maple Hill Manor Bed & Breakfast with the intention of continuing and preserving the legacy of the country estate.  They are both lifelong residents of Oregon and decided to sell their remodeled farmhouse on 20 acres in the Willamette Valley to pursue what Catherine calls the “reverse Oregon Trail.”

Meet Justin

Justin was born in Oregon and spent his youth in Pendleton, a small Eastern Oregon town.  He started a paper route at the young age of 10. During the world-famous Pendleton Roundup Rodeo, he sold programs and worked as an usher.  His family moved to Salem, in the Willamette Valley, during his Junior High years.  Here, he started to play football and joined the wrestling team.  He continued to compete in these sports throughout high school.  As a freshman, he worked at Madrona Hills Retirement Center during the summer season when school was out.  More on that story in a bit….

After high school, he began working his way up in the beverage industry.  Starting his career at 7Up, he moved on to Coca-Cola after less than 2 years.  There, he worked as a merchandiser, an Account Manager, and then a Merchandising Supervisor, managing a team of 13-27 merchandisers.  Over his 28-year career at Coca-Cola, he frequently won sales competitions, the Salesman of the Year award, and many other awards.

Meet Catherine

Catherine was born in Ravenna, Ohio, where her paternal family is from.  But her parents chose to move to Oregon when she was just 6 months old.  Catherine grew up in the country and, like most young girls, fell in love with horses.  Her maternal grandparents owned a 2,000-acre cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon, where she rode her first horse.   She can still recall riding double with her Grandmother to move cattle.  

Her love of horses continued through grade school, during which time neighbors moved in with Paints and Quarter Horses.  She was in heaven.  Every day after school, she cleaned stalls in exchange for riding.  Years later, as an adult, she bred warmbloods for dressage.  Her favorite passion was to go horse camping and trail riding in the Oregon wilderness.   Violet, her Friesian, and two mini donkeys moved here with them from Oregon.

Catherine left a successful real estate career of 26 years, selling residential, acreage, and horse property.

How They Met

Ok, back to that story about Justin working at the retirement home.  Justin and Catherine actually went to the same Junior High and High School.  But, they didn’t like each other.  Justin actually scratched out Catherine’s school picture in his yearbook, which they still have.  Catherine turned 16 and needed a part-time job.  She knew the manager at Madrona Hills Retirement, so she went one evening to interview.  The interview took place during the dinner service, so while she was sitting with the manager at the table, Justin walked out of the kitchen with a tray of food to serve the residents.  So right there, during the interview, Catherine rolls her eyes in the back of her head, thinking, “Oh great, he works here.”  But she got the job anyway.  It took 6 months of working together before they could even speak to each other, let alone be civil.  Then, they slowly became friends.  And the rest, they say, is history.
